It is a depression in the western desert 103km south west of Cairo, surrounded by night plateaus. Fayoum gets its water supply from the Nile through Bahr Youssef. it is separated from the Nile Valley by a ridge and contains a large lake, called Qaroun, one of Egypt's largest saltwater lakes.
